Teaching Aid Program: Teaching Volunteer Opportunities in Nepal

Teaching Aid Volunteer
Assist with teaching at pre-school and primary levels : Teaching Nepalese children is a throughly enjoyable experience. No matter what you believe your skill level to be, you have something to offer. Volunteer Aid Nepal provides a meaningful placement for anyone willing to volunteer to assist with teaching at pre-school and primary levels, and believes that the only skills required for volunteering for this Program are a willingness to learn and an open mind. In some placements, volunteers not only teach English but also music and dance, crafts, cooking and the concept of “play”. Students are between 4 and 12 years of age.
Assist with teaching at lower secondary level: At lower secondary level, volunteer teachers can teach core subjects such as English (including grammar), mathematics, science, social sciences, and can initiate extra-curricular activities. You don’t need any formal teaching qualifications to teach at lower secondary school. You will, however, need a good command of written and spoken English, and the creativity and imagination to make an effective contribution. Students are between 10 and 15 years of age.
Assist with teaching at secondary and higher secondary levels : A teaching qualification is required to teach at secondary level. Professional teachers, TEFL holders, educational charity workers and professional trainers are well placed to teach English and reading classes to Nepali students at secondary and higher secondary levels. It is our goal to ensure that the children of Nepal are able to advance their practical written and verbal English language skills for a better future. In Nepal, English is important for a better job placement and educational advancement. Students are between 13 and 21 years of age.

Benefits
Why do voluntary teaching?
Voluntary teaching is beneficial to everyone involved, it provides volunteers:
- the opportunity to work in an environment culturally different from their own
- an experience that is unique to Nepal; they will return home with a far greater understanding of the way in which millions of the world’s population think and act
- an understanding and appreciation for Nepalese children and youth culture
- an insight into the way in which their students think, live and interact
Teaching will ultimately equip volunteers with fuller and better cross-cultural understanding.
Our volunteers are providing an important skill for the students they teach, that of conversational English. Having a native English speaker is a massive advantage and very helpful to the schools in which they teach. Both students and staff members alike fully appreciate the language skills and enthusiasm our teaching volunteers bring to their classes. The students also use the opportunity of having a foreign teacher to learn about the customs and practices of the West.
In summary, volunteers can gain following benefits.
• Personal growth
• A sense of purpose
• Gaining independence and confidence
• Connecting with others
• Seeing a country from the inside-out
• Learning through traveling
• Learning about cultures and languages
